On February 1, 1908, King D. Carlos I of Portugal and his heir, Prince Luís Filipe, are assassinated at Terreiro do Paço, in Lisbon. Anarchists affiliated with the Carbonária, including Alfredo Costa and Manuel Buiça, effectively ended the Portuguese monarchy with a single blow. The extreme violence of this act left Portuguese society in shock and culminated in the division between the Monarchists and the Republicans.
This series portrays the times of great social upheaval that preceded the Regicide and its repercussions, which ultimately changed the Portuguese political regime.
