Terra Longe

Director: Daniel Thorbecke

Creative Documentary, 2003

The film tells the story of Januario, a 72-year-old man who, despite the difficulties he has with his legs and hands, decides to be one of the first and only to leave the village in the valley and look for a safe home in the new houses. Because of previous volcano eruptions, he has already lost most of his possessions. Neither the village’s close-knit community nor his marriage of almost 40 years can stop him. Januario doesn’t want to leave his fate in the hands of the volcano. So he goes across the island of Fogo to visit a shepherd friend, João. He asks him for advice about his future. He also visits his dead mother in the cemetery to tell her of his decision to leave the town of Chã das Caldeiras.
